Formula 1 drivers have the risk taking, jet setting lifestyle of the rich and famous but senior members of their teams are also becoming media personalities in their own right. In the second post in this series I continue my look at the 2013 grid by profiling the race engineers of the Williams, Force India and Sauber F1 teams. I’ll take a look at career history, education and what took them to this most envied of F1 jobs.

Race engineers are heavily involved in race car setup, strategy and driver management. Its as close as you can get to being a Formula 1 driver without actually sitting in the car. For these reasons, many of the people who want to work in Formula 1 want to become a race engineer. Below I’m profiling the engineers who work at Williams F1, Sahara Force India and Sauber.

Jonathan Eddolls

Race Engineer for car 16 – VALTTERI BOTTAS

Nationality : BRITISH
Age : 32

Jonathan, like so many of the other race engineers this year has been promoted to the job over the winter having previously been a data & performance engineer. Jonathan has a very good academic background having a first class degree in Engineering Science from Christ Church college, Oxford. His final year project won the SET (Science, Engineering and Technology) Award in 2003.

He managed to get a summer placement at Williams F1 during his studies, working in the R&D department and impressed the team enough to be taken on full time after graduation. He became a data engineer in 2005 and has previously worked with drivers such as Rubens Barrichello, Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld.

Andrew Murdoch

Race Engineer for car 15 – PASTOR MALDONADO

Nationality : BRITISH
Age : 35

Like Jonathan Eddolls, Andrew Murdoch also moves up to the position of race engineer for the first time in 2013 having worked as a data engineer at Williams since 2006. Andrew grew up in Northern Ireland and spent his evenings and weekends volunteering for Chris Paul’s Formula Ford team. This led to a placement at Reynard Cars during his degree course in Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University, Belfast.

Andrew chose to continue his studies and joined the Masters program in Automotive Engineering at Cranfield University. Having graduated he then worked at Lola on their Champ Car project before joining Williams F1 in 2006.

Brad Joyce

Brad has been a race engineer with this team since the 2006 season when it rebranded itself as Midland F1 from the remnants of infamous Jordan team (owned by Eddie Jordan). Brad has worked with a number of different drivers including Tiago Montiero, Adrian Sutil and most recently Nico Hulkenberg, coming close to winning the final race of the 2012 season. For 2013 Brad will be re-uniting his partnership with Sutil.

Prior to Formula 1, Brad worked with the Carlin Nissan World Series team and came across to the Formula 1 team with Team Manager Trevor Carlin.
